In the NPIHN network, churches and synagogues provide volunteers and rooms for overnight guests, serving as an alternative to shelters.  Each shelter usually provides shelter for three to five families, for two weeks to a month at a time, several times per year.  Families stay at the congregation in the evening and overnight, and make use of our family center during the day, if they are not working.

Each host congregation offers:

  • sleeping accommodations (such as Sunday School classrooms);

  • a kitchen area for cooking.

  • a social area for communal eating

  • a volunteer coordinator, and caring volunteers!

Congregations are responsible for supplies, including linens, toiletries, basic groceries, first aid kits, and toys, books, and games for children.  Our organization provides beds and partitions.  All congregations must be adequately equipped for fire safety, with extinguishers, smoke detectors, exit signs, and planned exit routes.
